Going to Amtgard for the First Time Soon

Postby Kentngo » Sat May 28, 2011 4:35 am

Maybe not on May 29th soon, but I will be going sometime. What do you think I need to bring? I stared at the wiki for a bit and I want to be an archer.

Do I need to go in garb? If so, where can I get materials to make it?

I'm new to this, so my questions are basically, "How does this work?"

Thank you in advanced.

You need to have garb after you have been in for a month. The same goes for your weapons. Most lands have loaner gear, although bow and arrows usually are not included in the loaner gear. You can use fabric found at thrift stores, fabric stores, or just an old bedsheet you have laying around. Ask the members at the park when their next A&S session will be help. A&S means Arts and Sciences and it is when they make garb and weapons. Many of the members should be happy to show you how to make what you need. Most of all HAVE FUN!

Will you be coming to Ashen Spire? You do not need to be in garb right away. We have a pretty lean "eventually" policy, as the object is really to have fun. As far as making garb goes, it can be really elaborate or it can be as simple as running over to Joana's and getting a yard of fabric, cutting a hole in it for your head, draping it over your body, and securing it with a cloth belt. Arrows are a little more complicated to make and though there is a description in the rule book, I think it is probably better learned from someone who has them. Which we have at our park, so we have just about anyone you might need to teach you something.

I'll be coming to Ashen Spire on June 5th, along with a friend of mine.

I've heard different things from different people about bow rules. I know about the 35# @ 28" rule, but I need to ask anyway.

Is there a bow height limit?

I've heard of some arrow injury stories so...I'll be watching people craft arrows before I do it on my own.

No.
A longbow is an Ability, so no bow height limits. Just no compounds.

Nope, bows can be as short or tall as you can find/make them, as long as they follow the 35# @ 28" rule. Saddle bows all the way to the those ridiculous shinto ceremony bows are allowed. Though the later could be hard to use on a hectic field of battle.

The two big keys to making arrows is to make sure you penny blunt the tip and use a very dense firm foam as the first layer after the penny. Shop floor type mats work great for this.

Eh...my friend and I will be joining on June 12th, I guess.

A feast is too much to jump into for newcomers like us.

It is not so much a feast as a small amount of food before we begin for the day. We are starting at noon on this day so if you show up at 1:30 or so, it should be a normal park day after that.

Or come at noon and hang out. We would love to have you come at either time, whatever is comfortable for you.

I know for sure that I will step into a giant 20 foot radius circle while someone is talking about the promised time coming, now slay, so I won't be attending the feast. My friend and I are planning on attending the next week, so we have more time to practice and prepare.

See you guys on June 12!

This is my garb idea. I know for sure it is going to be difficult to use it for archery and that it looks closer to a wizard robe, and that I won't be finishing this for a while, but it is sexier than being naked.

I'm just worried about how the orange sash will clash with it.

If someone remarks about the clashing of the sash with your garb, the correct response is to shoot them with your bow. Preferably in a soft place. Perhaps even more than once.
