Feast of Mars XI, October 8-11, 2015

Postby Yrduna » Tue Apr 14, 2015 2:46 pm

This post will be continually updated as we finalize details.

Have you ever wanted to be a gladiator? OK, probably not – the life expectancy issues tend to be a deterrent. What if you could be a gladiator for one glorious day, and then resume your normal life, still alive and not even lightly maimed? There, we can help. If this has always been your dream (or even if you just want to spend an awesome weekend with wonderful people) we’d like to invite you to the eleventh annual Feast of Mars. This event has come a long way in the last decade, growing from a day event to the largest California Amtgard has to offer, and we’d love to see even more people take the field this year. Feast of Mars is expanding, and while we are trying new things, we are keeping the great things that make Feast of Mars a special event!

Feast of Mars XI will be held from October 8th through October 11th, 2015 at San Lorenzo Park in King City, California. We’ll have food, fun, battlegames, and, on Saturday, the piéce de résistance: The 11th Annual Feast of Mars games. That morning, our gladiators will line up to be purchased by our select group of trainers, be issued their uniforms, and proceed to the fun. We have a variety of our classic games, while expanding on new ideas from last year!

There’s nothing quite like this event, in or out of Amtgard. We’d like to thank everyone who’s been a part of this event over the years, whether as staff, trainer, or gladiator (or, as in one case, all three). We hope to see all of our old friends take the field once more, and to make some new friends as well.

I'm Bai Fhu, a member of the Amtgard Park Pegasus Valley (Albuquerque, NM) in the kingdom of Dragonspine. Just posting because this sounds like a cool event and I want to stay current. Hoping to make a trip home to Cali!

Friday games!

Non-class games will include the scavenger hunt, archery tournament, and the Dice-of-Fate tourney (the Wheel being currently under repair). There is also a dragon competition wherein teams will write and perform a mad-libs style play, getting characters, a premise, and lines for the play by partnering with a battlegame team. These plays will be performed after dinner on Friday.

Class games- Players wearing a toga style garment will get their class's Look the Part bonus for each battlegame.

Morning class battle: Munera ex Graecia, Life Pool, Objective- Capture treasure and captives (NPCs)

Odysseus has opened the gates of Troy. The Greeks must get loot and captured slaves from the city to their fleet outside the gates, while the Trojans hide their belongings and families in their family tombs. The game is over when all treasure and NPC characters have been captured. The winning team will have the most combined points- some treasure and captives are worth more than others.

Dragon tie in- Some treasure boxes and all captives will supply teams with the character archetypes they must use for their play. Teams can only use an archetype if they captured it, but may create multiple characters from that archetype; e.g. a team that captured the “old man” character type can have 6 old men in their play.

Midafternoon class battle: Carthago Delenda Est- Life Pool, Objective- Hold and claim territory

Carthage is under siege in the final battle of the Punic Wars. The Romans and Carthaginians are fighting for control of the city. Buildings are represented by poles with tags attached- the more tags, the bigger and more important the building (popups may be used for buildings if we have enough). Players can claim territory by holding a tag with a free hand and counting “Claiming 1, Claiming 2… Claiming 10” (count may change before the battle) after which they can remove the tag and it is claimed for their team. Only one player at a time may be claiming a tag from a given building. Count must be restarted if player lets go. Tags cannot be looted. The team with the most tags wins.

Dragon tie in: Each tag is labeled with a point value. The team with the most points has a choice: they get first pick of a premise for their play or they can choose a premise for the losing team. If they choose the second option, the losing team selects for them.

Late afternoon class battle: Idus Martiae- Life Pool, objective- control and escort NPC

On the Ides of March, Caesar must safely reach the Senate house. The teams fight to control Caesar and escort him to various checkpoints through Rome before going to the Senate, where Caesar will receive his honors. Each team will have its own checkpoints and a certain number of traitors working for the other team. The game is over when Caesar reaches the Senate and receives a token object. The winning team controls Caesar when he receives his object. For extra flurb factor, the team captains are Mark Antony and Decimus Brutus. If Brutus’s team wins, they can assassinate Caesar in the Senate.

Dragon tie in: Every time a check point is reached, the team will select a line to use in their play. The more lines used, the more points a team gets during the performance.

Saturday Info:
A key feature of FOM is that players who participate in the Saturday Gladiator games receive points. These games have their own weapons and your personal weapons are not used. Players and trainers select from the prize table based on their final score.

RECEIVING POINTS:
Players: Winning the battle nets a team or player 3 points, 2nd place- 2 points, third- 1 point. Individual players will be awarded points from the Gods/Luminaries and the Reeves throughout the day for demonstrating good roleplay and showing good sportsmanship. They can also lose points for bad sportsmanship. Roleplay and sportmanship points will be weighted and some will be worth more than others. Final weights are dependent on what we see Saturday and will be shared before winners are announced.

Trainers: Trainers will receive points every time a member of their team does and at the same weight. They will also be awarded points based on how much gold they have at the end of the day after gambling on matches. Points from gold will be weighted, the weight TBD.

THE GAMES:
The games are divided into 2 categories- whole team games where everyone plays and trainer’s choice (TC) games where a smaller number of players from each team play. Trainers will select the players for the TC games; all players will have the chance to participate in at least one TC game. Points for placing in whole team games will be awarded to all players, points for placing in TC games will go only to the participating players.

WHOLE TEAM GAMES
Meatgrinder: 6 way battle. Open weapon shatter battle. Single life. When your number is called, join the game and kill everyone not on your team. Numbers are called once. Winning team survives, 2nd place is last to shatter, 3rd place is second to last to shatter. Surviving players on the winning team get an extra point.

Thermopylae: Timed shatter battle. Single life. Team playing the Greek side is open weapon, all other teams are single short. Numbers are called to attack in waves until the Greek team is shattered. Points awarded at end of day to the Greek teams who lasted the longest. Note- Thermopylae will be run twice during each set and each team will have a chance as the Greek side.

Survival/ Retrieval: 3 way battle. Half the team plays Survival, the other half plays Retrieval. Both are open weapon. Survival- 3 teams fight to shatter each other. Single life. Dead stay on the field. No extra points for surviving the game; your team gets the bonus of having less dead to retrieve. 1st place has surviving players, 2nd place is last to shatter, 3rd place is first to shatter. Retrieval- teams must retrieve their dead and get them back to the gate. Infinite lives, respawn count TBD. 1st place is first to retrieve all dead, 2nd place is second, 3rd place is last. No points for survival or not dying.

TRAINER’S CHOICE GAMES (Points awarded to individual players)

Pluto’s Gold: 3 way battle. Open weapon. Retrieve the gold and get it to your gate. Infinite lives, respawn count TBD. Game is over when all gold is off the field. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place determined by how much gold they have. No points for survival/ not dying.

Horatii at the Bridge: 3 players vs an enemy team in sequential 1 on 1 combat. Open weapon. Horatii team streaks are recorded. Points awarded at end of day to players and trainer on the 3 teams with highest total streaks.

Ganymede’s Run: 3 way battle. Open weapon. One player has a ladle and must fill the team’s cup with water while defended by teammates. Infinite lives, respawn count TBD. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place determined by how quickly cups are filled. No points for survival/ not dying.

Armbind: 3 way battle. Open weapon shatter battle. 2 players hold a rope and fight 2 other teams until teams are shattered. Winning team survives, 2nd place is last to shatter, 3rd place is first to shatter.

Drawn and Quartered: 6 way shatter battle. Single sword. 6 players hold on to a ring and fight to the death. Players do not take wounds, only kill shots. Winning player survives, 2nd place is last to die, 3rd place is second to last to die. No extra survival points.

Feast of Mars has a limited number of service positions available. If you can serve at meals, help with kitchen clean up, or take some late night gate shifts, you can get into the event at half to no cost.

Requirements- you must be at least 18, from California, and arriving before 4:00 pm Friday (Thursday is even better).

Do not reply here- email autocrat at feastofmars.com and let me know how you’re willing to help and when you plan to arrive. The more you’re willing to do, the bigger the discount. Early responses get first consideration.

Important Sign In and Gate info for FOM:

If you want a green or yellow wristband, make sure to bring your ID. Everyone will be carded.

San Lorenzo Park will be charging an $8 a day parking fee for everyone not camping on site- we are NOT collecting it, it needs to be paid at the booth as you enter the park. If you are day tripping, try to carpool to save on the parking cost.

If you are checking in on Thursday or Friday and staying in a hotel, bring a copy of your reservation when you sign in at FOM. We will let the person on the reservation in for $15. This is being done to offset the additional parking fee.

Hello FOM Crats,
Remember when I said I would host an open bar...that may or may not happen. I, sadly, had to change plans and will no longer be attending FOM this year. However, Sir Blackthorn, a member in good standing with the Westmarch Gentlemen's Club and co-founder of RED may still run an open bar Saturday. I'm sure he will let you know.
As for me...there are only a small number of reason's for backing out and one has found me.
Sorry,

The Bar will be Closed

Hello All,

I intended to get on here to tell everyone that the bar would be open. However, with some of the recent discussions about alcohol at events I am not sure we should run the bar this time. Both the Westmarch Gentleman's Club and RED are committed to safe consumption of alcohol by those who are of legal age. Groo and I will review the situation later and make future decisions regarding the bar at future events.

Thanks to the wonderful crats I will be opening the feast hall to all yellow and red wristband wearers and non drunks.

We will be watching The Black Cauldron Friday, Princess Mononoke and Sword in the Stone Saturday. I'll make popcorn and kettle corn too!

Starts after 8pm/court

If you can spare a couple gallons of ice cream, soda, or snacks I'll gladly take them. Also, volunteers to relieve me would be awesome (or a cup of hot coffee would rock too).

No drunks, no booze, no sex. Have a safe event people.
