There's an ass-ton of cheap(er) housing on the West Side. If you search around the UCSC site, I'd wager that they have a section for student housing. Housing in Santa Cruz is expensive, in general. What I pay for my tiny studio gets me a decent single apartment up in your woods. Not cool.
If you're gonna search Craigs, check out housing near High Street, Nobel Drive, Mission Street, and the low end of Chestnut Street (there's a giant rent-controlled apartment complex at the end of the street, and very close to downtown and the Boardwalk). Whenever I do deliveries in those areas, I'm always seeing a metric ton of obvious student-types living there.
Studios and rooms for rent are very popular around these parts. $500 and up.
