1. Put the howitzer down. Long Swords are bad.

2. Don't sweat the small stuff. Name is one of these things. In fact, there's a very high probability that it will get changed, mutilated, or ignored completely. For example, Your current choice could be turned into Fang, Fangluvin, Luvin, Fang McLovin, etc. Live with it - it's a good sign.

My own name has suffered over the years (and no, it's not my original. But it's much better now) .. hell .. depending on where I'm @ and who is addressing me .. I'm either Brigade, Brig, B, Hippy, Hippy Faggot, Long Hair, Ray, or Mischief.

It happens, it's part of the fun of the game. Don't take anything too seriously.

whatever happens happens (I might get called hippie)

but I like longswords, Im good with them

Longswords have their benefits and drawbacks, my advice would be to learn short sword first, but do what feels right I suppose.

Allow me to expand on the "Stay away from longswords" comment.

People (particularly new players) tend to get caught up in an arms race, where the only consideration they have for the weapon is "Is it longer than anyone elses?" The idea is that longer weapons automatically = winning. A problem with longer weapons is they are easier to game plan against and offer less in the way of maneuverability. Another is that their angle of attacks and timing are easily predictable. A fighter with even just a little bit of training can close the 1' gap between a 36" short sword and a 48" long sword, and light the long-sword fighter up like a Christmas tree.

Materials wise, a long sword costs more to make and upkeep.

Game wise, long swords are more restrictive in class use and higher cost to spell points for magic users.

On most fields, you will notice that the best fighters are using short swords.

So, there you have it. Those are some actual reasons behind avoiding long swords. Your mileage may vary.

What is important is to do what is fun for you. If you are able to disassociate winning from having fun, you already have a leg up on a large majority of Amtgarders.

The most important thing you can do as a new Amtgarder, is to take your shots. If you think it hit you - it did. Strive to have unquestionable honor about taking your shots. People who blow off shots (cheating) are reviled, and tend to acquire extra special "attention" while on the field. People who play the game right make it a good experience for everyone.
