not necessarily, i made one that is roughly 18 inches long (give or take an inch or two) and i hit myself on the arm with it, and it hurt(not too bad) didnt leave a mark or bruise...

Not enough people are good enough with daggers to worry me. but if you're worried about hurting someone with it, don't. That's just how daggers tend to feel.

Always good to check around first before you field equipment you might think is unsafe. But your dagger sounds like an average dagger.

All weapons will be tested by the Champion prior to their first use. Also the Champion is supposed to schedule a monthly weapon check to insure that all weapons are safe. Basically if YOU are not willing to be hit by it, then it is not safe.

There are several stories floating around about champions/testers turning their back to get STROKED by a weapon... and the foam comes off mid swing.

Everyone watching cringes and/or lunges for a first aide kit. The person struck responds with something along the lines of "That's a bit stiff, but sure, I'll let it pass".

I've heard it told as "friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend saw it" and as "I saw it". YMMV.

If all you do is spiral wrap tape at the base to hold it on, the tape can "telescope" out, allowing the foam to shoot off. i have seen foam telescope before, but never come completely off.

telescope? as in fly off the core, because i tape the foam on lengthwise, then wrap more tape over the excess 2 inches of tape on the core...

Yes, i suspect you wont have any issues... most folks don't. Its poor contsruction that leads to those kind of things.

Most daggers don't hit hard at all. I'm interested in your construction technique. How did you build the daggers?

i put pool noodle over a 13 inches of 1/2 inch pvc, then duct taped (not too tight, not too loose) lengthwise then took more tape wrapped it around the extra tape to keep it on the core nice and tight, same with the pommel, i covered the ends of the noodle with foam anti fatigue floor mat (its like camp pad but thicker)
covered the whole thing with nylon stockings, and duct taped the handle area...

So yeah. Most likely not legal. Or atleast you don't want to use it on your friends. Next time, instead of duct tape... try using clear plastic (packaging tape). That will make it much more friendly.

Also, 1/2 inch pvc isn't the best core. Even if your using it just for daggers
