Rules and Etiquette

Writers of Westmarch, welcome to the Writer's Guild Forum.

This forum is for the original writing of our Amtgard community, for support and feedback.

Rules for submitting your writing:

  • Start a new topic for your story.
  • At the beginning of your discussion include:
    • Title
    • Genre
    • A description of your target audience. Not every story is for everybody. Who do you see reading this?
    • What feedback are you looking for? Are you looking for a checkup on spelling and consistent verb tenses? Do you want feedback on story structure?  The more specific you are here, the more actionable your feedback will be. If you're only looking for moral support and cheers, that is absolutely valid. Writing is tough, we could all use a back-pat.
  • Don't post anything that shouldn't be here. Amtgard is open to players 14 and over.  Please keep your stories in the PG-13 range. The mods can and will nix anything that shouldn't be here.
  • Have a thick skin. Everyone here is trying to help you grow as a writer and improve your text, even if that growth hurts a little.
  • Assume good faith. Again, everyone here is trying to help.

Rules for providing feedback:

  • Be kind. It can be difficult to put your work out publicly, don't make it any harder than it needs to be.
  • Speak the truth. If the text you're reviewing can be improved, let them know where. Sitting on your hands won't help anyone.
  • Provide actionable review. "This is bad" is not useful. "This dialogue feels stilted, maybe use contractions and simpler verbs" is much better.
  • Keep in mind the target audience. If they intend the story for middle-grade girls, bear in mind what that audience is looking for and can relate to.
